IPhone hack update: Mice pull back into the lead

Seems the release of new firmware for the iPhone and iPod Touch a couple weeks ago was only a minor setback to those who would hack open what Apple has sealed (see “Itchy & Scratchy time for the iPhone“). After first crafting a way to reanimate hacked iPhones that had been disabled by the update (see “Cheesed off at Apple, mice regain some ground“), the crack crew has again found a way to implement third-party applications on the iPhone and the iPod Touch as well, according to Engadget. The newest hacks are apparently all based on one particular weak spot in the code, however, so once Apple pushes out its next update, the dance will begin again.

UPDATE: Engadget now reports it has tested and confirmed the latest hack, still unreleased to the public. There’s also a quick timeline if you’re just now filling in your cat vs. mouse scorecard at home.
