Sony does its part to deepen Foster City labor pool

Layoffs are apparently under way at Sony Computer Entertainment of America’s Foster City headquarters, with 80 to 100 employees being asked to turn in their badges.

Management says the cutbacks are spurred by continuing company losses, including the skyrocketing cost of Playstation 3 game development. Meantime, the company is considering another PS 3 price cut, as sales of the most expensive game console of this generation continues to lag far behind the strapping Nintendo Wii.

i sincerely hope that someday we will have evolved enough to stop comparing a true high definition 1080p/blu-ray player/60GB harddrive/gaming console with the 420p wii for toddlers and seniors.

As for Blu-Ray, it’s way too expensive & doesn’t provide any real benefit at THIS time.
Maybe in the future, but Sony was too far out, too early on this one & no one wants another format war.
Sony has got to stop with the incompatible formats.
It’s worse, financially, than batteries that catch on fire.

I have to agree with Garry, Sony is far too ready to introduce new formats, Beta, 8mm, and now Blu-Ray. Besides who really needs a bleeding edge video format on a game console. Very STUPID move! Sony should have introduced the PS3 with a standard DVD drive, it could have launched on time, and at a popular price.
