PS3 to launch with indentured servitude purchase plan

When it finally arrives at market, Sony’s PlayStation 3 may be a bit more dear than anyone, except Microsoft, would like. Apparently, the price Sony has in mind for the PS3 isn’t very aggressive. In an interview with Toyo Keizai, Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Ken Kutaragi said we’re all going to have to work a little bit harder if we want to buy one of Sony’s next generation consoles. “Our goal for PlayStation 3 is for consumers to think to themselves, ‘I will work more hours to buy one,’ ” Kutaragi said. “We want people to feel that they want it, irrespective of anything else.”

    If you want to see real My Head’s In The Sand I’m Going To Screw The Consumers in the land of hi-tech, check out the in-car GPS systems.

    I’ve got a Garmin Street Pilot III. It doesn’t know that the NY State Thruway from NYC to Albany was completed 30-40 years ago. Their database of facilities and attractions is inaccurate and out of date. Garmin doesn’t make updates and error patches available. A new in-car navigation system was $800 at Sam’s Club this afternoon.

    Buying one is idiocy. You can buy an elderly laptop, I’ve got a Thinkpad 600x, a GPS and a data cable, Microsoft Street and Trips, all for less than half of the price at Sam’s Club. Put ‘em together with a wireless card and Network Stumbler and you’ve got a talking GPS navigation system with a better database and a way to send e-mail and log on for your lates Silicon Valley news.

    Go figure.

    I agree the markup on car gear is harsh. Where can I find the parts and how much are we talking for my own version of a GPS?

    I’m looking for line by line estimates and reputable places so that I don’t get taken for a ride.

    Garmin (www.garmin.com) makes map updates for the Street Pilot III available on their web site, see http://shop.garmin.com/cartography/mapsource/update/cd_update_details.asp?CD=010-10391-04 .This map was updated on 6/1/2005. Also, there is a cartographic error report form to notify Garmin of map errors.
